LO3: Task 4 - Evidence of carrying out a specific production role for a chosen media production

Roles and Responsibilities 

During the production of our documentary for unit 41 where I was acting as a director by telling others what to do but also getting involved with filming and editing. William Kirby and Andrey Yushin both was part of the production team with responsibilities such as filming, edit and more.

The documentary contains a swear word with the crowd drinking alcohol where we did a screening of our documentary where people would rate the documentary a 12 because of the alcoholic drinks and swearing in it based on BBFC ratings. 

We used songs which had been written by the band with there own lyrics instead of the band doing a cover of a song where we would have to get permission in order to do that where us recording one of there own songs allowed us to do what we want with it. 

It's important during the production that the director gets across the ideas of what are envisioned which I did by creating a storyboard of my ideas to present to the rest of the team. The storyboard is evidence if you was to look at the documentary shows exactly what the storyboard shows which  effectively put down and followed. 

Development of skills 

Filming this documentary allowed myself to excel in being a leader by telling people what to do and telling them my ideas which people developed on. It also allowed myself to communicate with different members of the band who we showed the documentary to and they really liked it by the way it tells there story and allows people to see how they cope with the pressure of perfuming in front of all these people by headlining a big venue with them saying that they want us to do something for them again in the future. At the start of planning the documentary I decided to say I wanted to be in tis role because I knew in my head how I wanted the documentary to look like and what content we would actually put in it which we all agreed that the final piece is what we all had in mind with us all contributing different ideas to create this. I made sure to pick up an additional camera as well as my own and made sure that they were both charged up and had sd cards in them with spare batteries and sd cards incase something was to happen where I told different members to have different paperwork done by a certain time and set myself deadlines for paperwork and things so that we could get it all in on time and meet the deadline. 

Taking on additional tasks

When in the process of creating the documentary for unit 41 I also did additional tasks like filming at the gig where I worked on recording the interview and got different shots of the band playing on stage and of the crowd which showed the build up of it not being busy to then becoming really busy. Once the interview and band playing footage had been completed we started editing the documentary where I assisted with editing on different parts of the documentary. I also did a lot of paperwork like storyboards, risk assessments and more which I took on all of these tasks because it helped myself and my group complete the documentary within the allocated deadline. 

LO 2: Task 3 - Understanding Skills needed to fulfill the role of a Director

I will be researching and looking at the skills and qualities between the director and the rest of the production team where I will be talking about the role which I actually played.

Verbal Communication

Communication between different members of the production team is vital so they understand what you need from them during the filming process and other bits which contribute towards the final product. During unit 41 I told my team what I wanted to film and the different angles which we would need to record it from in order for it to look good in the final product.  The director has a lot of respect from members of the production team so they listen to you and do what you need them to do in order for the production to be successful.

Written Communication

There are a lot of things required as being a director like different materials needing to be produced like scripts and storyboards with getting ideas and thoughts down on paper which will actually come out like how you envisioned it. When working on unit 41 to create the documentary myself and the other members created documents which helped us in the filming of the production of the documentary. The different storyboards were how I pictured the documentary to look with different scenes and different angles. 

Practical Production

The director needs to ensure that what he envisioned the production to be like is maintained throughout the filming. During the production of unit 41 I also filmed with the camera at the gig acting as a cameraman throughout the night where I also went on to edit some parts of the video. I improved my filming skills by getting different angles and shots with the Canon 650D and my editing skills using adobe premiere working on the footage we got. 

Creativity 

I believe during the production of unit 41 I put a lot of creative ideas into it and told the team what I envisioned it to look like where I was able to effectively communicate with them of the idea I had which they took well and liked the ideas and contributed some of there own to make it even better. 

LO 1: Task 2 - Job Roles Report

Input

As part of unit 41, we was asked to produce a short film / documentary. At the time myself and my group members had friends who were in a band who had suddenly started becoming very well known with them headlining big places and performing at festivals like tramlines. We took different ideas from different music videos and documentaries the Ratells // behind the fire" where they're walking to the stage, the band perfuming, the crowd but we added the interview with the band to make it into a documentary instead of a music video where the band are telling you how they feel before headlining a big event, how they came together, whats next for them and more.

Topic of research

I will be investigating the different roles within the film production industry where I most specifically looked at director and camera operator. The reasons for myself looking into both of these roles is due to the units 46 and 41 where in 46 I took lead in deciding the different scenes, what was going to happen and said and told some of the people with cameras what to shoot and where to position the different lighting whilst also having a say in editing and doing some of the editing.  In unit 41 I mostly did the filming with the cameras whilst also telling the other person with the camera what to film and I also did some editing towards the documentary.

Camera Operator 

Thee camera operator is responsible for a lot of things like being in charge of both assistant cameraperson(s) by telling them to do different jobs like slating and loading, preparation, labelling, logging shots, safekeeping of reels / tapes and more. The main camera operator focuses on operating the camera on the scenes to get the best shots with more than one angle being filmed to see the best angle and making sure the scene doesn't have to be shot a hundred times but just a few. The camera operator also focuses on marking and pulling with having the role of maintanence and management of camera equipment. 

My suitability 

I think I would personally achieve well in the role as I can picture which angles a scene would look good from before filming the scene where I would setup multiple cameras to capture the different angles which I think will look good which usually come out and look effective for the video. During the production of filming unit 46 and unit 41 I had a lot of say where the camera should be positioned in order to capture that particular scene which when played back it looked effective and was used for both the film trailer and documentary. 

Director 

The director is responsible for overlooking the whole production of the film by giving different roles and jobs to different people. The director controls the story of the film, the actors, how they will look,  music, locations and more whilst giving each production team a certain budget which they must stick to if they can. The director will instruct a camera operator on what they need to do and achieve to capture the scene from different angles like he may ask them to film a car chase from different points like a tracking shot following the cars, a car chasing them from behind so you can see the car chase from somebody they've just passed point of view, somebody in the streets point of view, up top to see the car chase and any objects in the road coming up and more. 

Role Comparison 

Even though both of the roles have great important when producing a film especially the camera operator trying to get the right angles of scenes to make the film look good. I believe the director has one of the most important jobs with a lot of responsibilites by delegating roles, jobs, budgets with a lot of the time the director telling people what he wants so that the different teams can capture that.

Sound Engineer - The sound engineers make music and sounds for film and games

Writer - The writer creates scripts for the actors who will read it during the film

Illustrator - The illustrator creates designs, creates plans and sketches.

Runner - The runner will do jobs like PR, transporting equipment and more.

Post-production supervisor - The post production supervisor works alongside the director with responsibilities like being in charge of the post production budget and jobs.

Editor (lead) - The lead editor is in charge of the post production team with the role of checking the sound and film.

Director - The director has one of the most important jobs where they're in charge of everything with planning and overseeing different roles and jobs with the director managing the editing during post production to ensure the film comes out how he envisioned it to be.

Unit Publicist - The unit publicist works through the post and primary production to link media to the production team.

PR Manager - The PR Manager has a variety of jobs which could range from press launches to making sure the company is viewed as a good company where they manage any negative claims.

Different Industries

The QA tester’s job is to test games by debugging them, testing and alters them with making sure they’re high standard before they go public. The testers will keep playing the game after it has gone public to keep finding any bugs and issues which have been missed or created when it goes public with people playing together in real time. 

Designer - The designer is in charge of creating pre production plans for the game with creating ideas and concepts for more media like characters, content and more.

Sound engineer - The sound engineer makes sounds for games and other things during the main production. 

Artist - The artist will work through main production of a game to create designs, drawings of maps, characters and more. The artists will work through production in the pre production to create initial ideas and plans. 

Marketer - The marketer is in charge of manages the distribution by spreading the word of the production to millions of people through social media and advertising with dropping snippets of the product as a teaser so people are excited about the launch of the product.
